The Red Wine Test: Steps to Choose the Best

Oh, the excitement that a good bottle of wine brings to the table! It has the capability to make every occasion more elegant and to instantly boost your mood. It is the ultimate drink for family gatherings and celebrations. And not only family ones for that matter, it is many people’s favourite drink to have anytime, anywhere; millions of people are passionate about its aroma and flavour.

However, not all wine is produced the same way. One of the most favourite choices world-wide is definitely red wine. And since the market is full of red wine of questionable quality, finding a quality bottle of red wine can be quite a challenge. But do not panic, we got you, follow our steps to find great red wine that will taste like heaven.

Drinking Red Wine

Step #1

In many cases, what makes a red wine so good or not good at all, is the food combination you are having it with. So, to prevent that from happening, first decide how you will be serving the wine. Do you plan to serve it on a wine & cheese party or is it for a weekend family barbecue? Bear in mind that light- bodied red wine is better paired with cheese, while full bodied great red wine pairs perfectly well with steak.

Step #2

Remember that region of origin is no more guaranty of good red wine. In the past, a great red wine was associated with specific regions of the word. But, since today wine is produced in every corner around the world and the characteristics that were once used to classify a good wine have changed, you cannot say anymore that a wine is good based on its place of origin. Although France, Italy, and Spain are known to produce the best quality red wines, Australia, Austria, Chile, South Africa and United States among others, also produce quality wine. So, rely on your senses to find out if a wine is of high-quality or not.

Step #3

The smell of the wine can help you recognize if it is a good wine or not. Your nose has the ability to respond to the aroma even before you take the first sip. Red wines have a unique aroma that you should try to smell. If you get a fruit smell, that means that it is a good wine, but if you get the smell of flowers, that means that probably the wine is not a good one. Wines that have an odor that feels like wet newspaper are definitely not of high-quality.

Step # 4

Consider the balance of the wine. The balance of the wine is obtained through a proper mixing of the ingredients in a special way that individuals cannot notice acidity or alcoholic taste. If you try a red wine and do not get tears in your eyes, that means that the wine is not acidic in nature. A wine that is in perfect balance allows a fresh feeling in the mouth and has low alcoholic content.

Step #5

It is true that a great red wine will certainly present a fruit taste, but there are other things that also need to be felt. When you swirl the sip inside your mouth, you should be able to feel other characteristics as well. If you detect a chocolate or nut taste in between the grapes, that means that you have a deep, great red wine in your hands.

Step #6

A good way to judge the quality of red wine is to pay attention on its finish. Does its flavour lasts for a sufficient time? If the taste remains on in your mouth for some time after you have gulped the wine down, this indicates that you took a sip of a great one.

At the end, the more you practice these steps, the more confident you will become in finding whether the red wine you are drinking is good or not. Good luck.
